About Helen Lewis:
Helen Lewis was an extraordinary dance teacher. Her commitment to dance was reflected by the love and affection of scores of students whose talents she developed and inspired. Helen founded The Belfast Modern Group that performed regularly in Northern Ireland, appearing at The Belfast International Festival at Queen’s over many years and with Northern Ireland Opera, among others.
Helen was also choreographer in residence for The Lyric Theatre in Belfast. Many of her students advanced to become professional dancers and teachers. The lives of all of Helen’s students were enriched by this remarkable woman who celebrated the vitality of dance as an art form. The dance studio at The Crescent Arts Centre is named after Helen Lewis, and is used regularly by many of those taught by Helen. A blue plaque on the building’s facade celebrates Helen’s legacy.
The Crescent is grateful to those who have made the Bursaries possible and proud to celebrate Helen into the future.
