Zine Making: A Radical Approach to Self-Publishing

Zines: the hand-made magazines and pamphlets which took off during the 1990’s have made a comeback! One of the simplest, most affordable and least restrictive forms of self-publishing, zines can be easily photocopied for distribution.

This workshop will begin with a brief background to zine-making before you begin making your own zines on topics of the participants’ choosing, not limited to making a fanzine of a favourite band/ writer/ artist, creating a pamphlet on a topic close to your heart, a short comic book, making a booklet of your own poems or flash fiction; there are endless possibilities.

There will be several zines available to read and take inspiration from. Participants will finish the session with at least one zine to take away and reprint using a photocopier.

Materials will be provided although participants are welcome to bring their own magazines, stickers, photos, and newspapers to use for collaging. Please note that if you know in advance that you’d like to make a fanzine you will need to bring materials about the subject of your zine to use in collage.

Suitable for those with no experience at all, and also seasoned ziners!

About the Tutor 

Shirley-Anne McMillan is an author of contemporary Young Adult fiction.

She lives in Co Down with her family. Shirley-Anne is an experienced tutor having taught courses and workshops to all ages and levels of experience with the John Hewitt Society and The Crescent Arts Centre among others. Her fourth novel, Grapefruit Moon, was published by Little Island in August 2023.
