About the tutor
Gavin Ferris is a Belfast based fingerstyle guitarist with over two decades of live performance experience, both as a solo act and as part of the widely celebrated String Ninjas.
Originally starting out as an Irish traditional player (tenor banjo), Gavin changed his focus to finger style guitar after being inspired by guitar players such as Antoine Dufour, Tommy Emmanuel, Thomas Leeb and more famously Andy McKee. Gavin then adopted a more percussive style of playing incorporating other forms of music such as rock, metal, flamenco, jazz and blues while still trying to hold on to his traditional roots.
This unusual blend of musical styles has culminated in a exciting sound and unique original compositions typified by rhythmic grooves, deep, driving bass, intricate percussion and distinctive melodies.
To date, Gavin has performed in many high profile music venues/festivals such as the Ulster Hall, the Black Box (Belfast), Queens Hall (Newtownards), The Limelight (Belfast), The Button Factory (Dublin), Stramash (Edinburgh), Stendhal festival, Dalriada Festival, Wild Woods Festival, and has performed alongside guitar legends such as Duo Frank Vignola, Vinny Raniolo, Preston Reed, Chris Woods Groove, The Showhawk Duo and Gary Lutton.
In 2017 Gavin, alongside notable classical violinist Mick Conlon, came together to form the String Ninjas, a two piece instrumental duo with a focus on reimagining classic songs from every genre and adapting them for instrumental arrangement. Their unique style, impressive musicianship and adaptable set list has allowed the pair to pursue their passions to become full time musicians.
“Gavin plays with an unstoppable groove and has a formidable stage presence that you cannot help but take notice of.” - Gary Lutton - Sky Arts Guitar Star Winner / online magazine.
