Imagine Festival presents The Ulster Worker Strike - 50 Years On

Talk

This March we are excited to welcome Imagine Festival as they bring to The Crescent a whole host of events.

Join us for a panel discussion marking the 50th anniversary the Ulster Workers’ Council Strike of 1974, once described as the most successful political action carried out by any European working-class since the Second World War.

Introduced by Dr. Connal Parr and Dawn Purvis, panellists include Carmel GatesJackie McDonald, Jackie Redpath and Sean O’Hare, who share their memories and thoughts on the legacy of the strike and what it means in 2024.

The Ulster Workers’ Council (UWC) strike was called in May 1974 by unionists and loyalists opposed to the Sunningdale Agreement, which had been signed the previous year and gave a consultative role to the Irish Government. The stoppage ended the prospect of power-sharing for a generation.
