Imagine Festival presents The Art & Science of Songwriting

Music & Words

This March we are excited to welcome Imagine Festival as they bring to The Crescent a whole host of events.

Join Nuala McKeever for a relaxed, fun evening of performance with singer-songwriters Anthony Toner and Brigid O’Neill and conversation about what makes a great song that stays with people for years and decades.

Chuck Berry said it all came down to mathematics, but you don’t hear people singing Pythagoras’ Theorem down the pub, do you?

With performances of some of their best-loved songs, Brigid and Anthony reveal the secrets of their own writing and discuss the work of their favourite artists as they explore the nature of their craft – is it inspiration, perspiration or computation?

Anthony Toner

Thanks to memorable and well-crafted songs like ‘Sailortown’, ‘Well Well Well’ and ‘The Road to Fivemiletown’. Anthony Toner is regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s finest songwriters and guitarists. He has developed that reputation with a stream of album releases and a strong calendar of performances over the last decade and a half, featuring his peerless playing and some insightful between-song stories. An audience member at a recent concert commented that the show had been ‘like watching a series of beautiful short films’.

Brigid O’Neill

“An immensely gifted story-teller whose songs soar to new heights in the live environment” (Hot Press)

Recent years have seen Brigid O’Neill gaining a deserved reputation as one of Ireland’s finest songwriters. Reviews of her critically acclaimed latest releases, have reaffirmed that the gifted artist is one of the most versatile, unique and fearless storytellers on the island. She is currently celebrating the launch of her new, highly acclaimed acclaimed album The Truth and Other Storiesrecorded in Nashville with grammy-nominated producer Neilson Hubbard (Mary Gauthier, the Orphan Brigade).

Nuala McKeever

Nuala’s latest one woman play, Truth, Love or Promise, has sold-out and received rave reviews since it debuted in 2023. It will be back on the Main Stage at the Lyric Theatre this summer, 28th August – 1st September. It’s also playing for 3 weeks in Bewley’s Lunchtime Theatre, Dublin from 28th April 2024.

“Nuala McKeever is a superb craftswoman…. Catch this production if you can…. A wonderful theatre experience.” (The Reviews Hub)

“McKeever writes as sharply as she acts….. the story-telling confidence of Charles Dickens… warm-hearted and engaging” (The Irish Independent)

“Breath-taking….. A tour de force!” (No More Workhorse)
