Summer Intensive: The Write Place - Writing about Spaces and Places

If you would like to take time out for your writing in a relaxed and stimulating environment, this is the course for you. We will meet each weekday morning at the Crescent from 10.30 to 1.00pm, and explore themes of space and place through a series of prompts and timed writing activities. You will also receive guided tasks to complete each afternoon at home. From Tuesday onwards, we will begin each class by sharing our writing and ideas from the previous day.

Themes and topics will include houses and homes, experiences and memories of inspiring places, the relationship between character and setting, metaphorical aspects of place and space, nature and the environment, form and structure, and designing our own ideal writing spaces.

This course is for writers of all levels of experience, and will include poetry, fiction, the creation of interesting characters, life writing, memoir, descriptive writing and travel writing. Prompts will include a wide range of poems and prose, as well as images and music. We will create a haiga, a Japanese poetic form which combines an image and a short poem.

Please bring along a notebook and a pen, and a picture, object or piece of coloured fabric which you would find inspiring in your personal writing space.

About the Tutor 

Shelley Tracey is a published writer and creative writing facilitator who has worked with groups in many settings, including reminiscence work and mental health.  Her experience includes journalling courses, writing classes in schools, prisons, health settings, higher education, in the community and voluntary sectors, and in arts centres. She has facilitated many creative writing and memoir classes and workshops at the Crescent Arts Centre.
