Summer Course

Join YA writers Stephen Daly and Shirley-Anne McMillan on this week-long summer writing camp for young adults.

 
You will learn how to create a short story and publish it in your own hand-made, photocopiable zine.
 
Expect to learn about character creation, setting and plot, and you will leave with your own mini-book which you can swap with friends, or sell for huge sums of money*.

This course will be led by two writing tutors: Monday - Wednesday with Stephen Daly and Thursday and Friday with Shirley-Anne McMillan

Tutor Bios

Stephen Daly is an author and writing facilitator. After 20 years of working in theatre as an actor, drama practitioner and producer, Stephen decided it was time to finally pursue writing. He did a degree in psychosocial studies followed by a MA in creative writing. He is passionate about mental health and the power of using writing to get to know ourselves and express who we are.

His debut novel, The Last Death Poet, an LGBTQ+ supernatural thriller set in Belfast was published in April 2026. He’s had fiction and nonfiction work published in anthologies, was shortlisted in the PFD Queer Fiction Prize in 2023 and was a winning finalist in the SCWBI Undiscovered Voices competition in 2024.

 

Shirley-Anne McMillan is an author of contemporary Young Adult fiction and the Children's Writing Fellow at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen's University. She is an experienced tutor having taught courses and workshops to all ages and levels of experience with the John Hewitt Society and The Crescent Arts Centre among others.

Shirley-Anne's fourth novel, Grapefruit Moon, was published by Little Island in August 2023.
