Tricks of the Trade

Sharing 36 years of Curatorial Experience join Museum Curator, Ciaran Doran, to take a look at behind the scenes and learn how to look after your own unique and precious items. 

Do you have a book or a photograph that you want to look at carefully or even a family heirloom such as a textile or letter? 

During this workshop you will learn basic things to look out for, how to look for signs of deterioration, be signposted to experts, learn how to pack a textile for storage at home or for transit. 

There will be plenty of examples to learn from or bring your own items to wrap and carefully take home.

With over 35 years experience working in Arts and Cultural Heritage your Tutor, an experienced Curator, will share secrets and tips from her extensive Museum career.

You will receive a pre-recorded selection of short film clips and will receive, by post, ten information sheets that will support the session.

You will learn how to look after items that you might have at home that are rare, precious and delicate, and you will look at the at care of the following: textiles, photographs and books, documents, china and glass, works of Art and works on paper, and even toys will get a look in! 

In your pack you will receive information about suppliers, training courses, storage, safety and, most importantly what NOT to do.

Your Tutor will be available to answer one-to-one queries and advice but is unable to undertake any valuation of items.

Participants will receive a Curator for The Day Certificate on completion of the workshop.
