Come along to The Crescent on a Tuesday evening and join us to immerse yourself in Irish traditional music and song.
This course will split its focus, spending the first half learning tunes such as jigs, reels, and airs on the tin whistle, and the second half of the term will be spent learning songs from the Irish singing tradition.
This 7-week course is suitable for people of all abilities, especially those who are interested in learning Irish through song.
Students are required to bring their own Tin Whistle to sessions.
Tutor Bio
Catriona Gribben is an experienced Traditional musician from Gweedore, the heart of the Gaeltacht of County Donegal. Growing up she was immersed in Irish language, music and culture. From the age of thirteen, Catriona performed with An Crann Óg, a local Traditional music group that promoted the music and songs from the area. An Crann Óg, gigged extensively around Ireland and Scotland, also to Gießen Germany to the Catskills in New York State.
Catriona is now gigging regularly around Belfast City.
In 2017, Catriona moved to Belfast to commence her degree in Music and Audio Production at Queen’s University. During the third year of the degree, Catriona carried out several months of work experience in the Irish Traditional Music Archives in Dublin. This time spent at ITMA inspired her to complete Arts and Humanities: Masters in Research.
Throughout this Masters, Catriona focused on collecting and documenting songs from the Donegal Gaeltacht that were at-risk from falling into obsoletion.
