Dance
Argentine Tango is a dance based on walking and improvisation. The music carries you through the movement and you build beautiful relationships with fellow dancers. This course is focused on social tango—the style danced in milongas (tango social dance events) all over the world.
Argentine Tango offers a wide range of physical, mental, and social health benefits. It's a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness, balance, coordination, posture, and flexibility. The social aspect of tango fosters a sense of community and belonging, contributing to overall well-being.
Throughout the course you will work on dancing in couples to draw upon your existing knowledge and continue developing your dance in tango, vals, and milonga rhythms. The course will focus on body awareness and communication alongside some study of the music and history of tango. Each week will bring new elements and welcome challenges which, by the end of the course, will mean you can dance with anyone, anywhere, and bring the beauty of your tango wherever you go.
This is an 5-week improvers course, aimed at those who have completed the beginners block or those at an improver level.
No need to come with a partner.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes without rubber soles.
No sessions on 20th April and 4th May.
About the Tutors:
Maeve McGreevy (co-founder & co-director, The Tango Academy of Ireland) is a professional dancer who specialises in Argentine tango, Argentine folklore and contemporary techniques. She holds a first-class BA (hons) in contemporary dance from London Contemporary Dance School and has developed a name for herself as a tango and folklore teacher and performer both locally and internationally.
She has trained and worked in England, Scotland, Italy, Poland, USA, Argentina and Ireland alongside partners including Tomás Corbalán, Slava Ivanov, Emilio Cornejo and Mariano Laplume. She brings aspects of all of these partnerships to her dance and classes.
As a teacher, Maeve focuses on detailed technique, sensitive musicality and clear communication within the couple, always with the aim of allowing dancers to explore their creativity and enjoy their bodies to their full potential.
Ximena Arias-Manzano (tutor, The Tango Academy of Ireland) is a devoted Tanguera who has learned various forms of dance since childhood, from classical ballet, contemporary ballet to various Latin dances. She found her passion for Tango in 2007 when she started her learning journey.
Ximena has trained with many well-known maestros of tango privately, in group classes and at Tango festivals all around the world, namely Argentina, various European countries, China, UK and Ireland. Her main influence and style come from the instruction of maestros such as Marcela Durán, “La Leona” Graciela Gonzalez, Ariadna Naveira & Fernando Sánchez, Josefina Bermúdez and Noelia Barsi. She is currently training with maestra Sabrina Véliz.
Ximena is passionate about teaching and emphasises the social, emotional, and intellectual dimensions of tango, not just the physical movement. Ximena’s goal is to inspire a passion for the dance and create a fun and engaging learning environment as well as teaching cultural and linguistic aspects of the music.
