Introduction to Poetry Therapy

Self Heal

New Workshop

Two poetry therapy workshops will take place on the 13th of May as part of the Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival 2023. The first is an introduction to poetry therapy, and the second focuses on responding to poetry therapy prompts.  Each is a free-standing event, and you are welcome to take part in one or both.

While these events will refer to the therapeutic aspects of poetry therapy, they are not therapy sessions.  They will focus on self-expression and creativity, and will be relaxed and inclusive. All are welcome.

There will be optional creative writing activities in both sessions, in response to poetry therapy prompts.

Poetry therapy involves responding to inspiring quotations, poems, stories and other art forms. It can support self-awareness, self-expression, wellbeing, and connection with one’s emotions and creativity. In common with other expressive arts therapies such as art therapy, music therapy and drama therapy, poetry therapy is used in a range of individual and group mental health settings.

Click here for more information about the Poetry Therapy In Practice: Myths, Journeys & Self-Discovery Workshop.

All are welcome.

If you feel that cost is a barrier to your participation, please get in touch with us at The Crescent for a discount code.

This year’s Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival runs from 11-21 May 2023 (to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week). The programme is a mix of varied, vivid arts events that aim to create a platform for high-quality artwork that deals compassionately and intelligently with mental health. Visit NIMHAF.org to see the full programme of events.

About the tutor

Shelley Tracey, a qualified Poetry Therapy Practitioner and member of the Irish Poetry Therapy Network, will share information about poetry therapy, training in this field, and what the IPTN offers. We will explore how poetry therapy works in practice by responding to some typical prompts. While this event will refer to the therapeutic aspects of poetry therapy, it is not a therapy session.  It will focus on self-expression and creativity, and will be relaxed and inclusive.
