Absolute Beginners Portrait

This 12-week course is a supportive and fun introduction for absolute beginners to portraiture through drawing and painting from a posed model.

Through a series of exercises you will learn about the anatomy, learning how to capture the likeness but most importantly how to get the sense of feeling into your subject.

You will learn both drawing and painting techniques that will better your understanding and help when approaching a portrait study.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners, in developing your skills in drawing and painting as you will get one on one help and guidance by Leah to suit each participant.

You will require the following materials for this course: 

• Pencils: HB and B pencils, you can get good sets in the works, the range and Hobbycraft
• Paper: A good sketch book, at least A4 in size
• Paint: Open to your own preference of paint whether it be watercolour, oil or acrylic. Colours: Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber/ Burnt Umber, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue & Cadmium Yellow
• Brushes: A set of good quality brushes to suit your desired paint with a good variation off sizes. As mentioned before, you can get all these materials in the works, the range, hobby craft or Bradbury Art, there’s no need to spend so much as you can get all of these materials at a reasonable price

About the Tutor

Leah Davis is a Belfast born and based Artist. Since graduating from Belfast School Of art in 2021 with Ba (Hons) Fine art, Leah has exhibited in numerous locations alongside other artists as well as being chosen for prestigious commissions.

Working primarily in oils, Leah has a distinctive painting style combining a unique understanding of colour with a broad knowledge and study of the human form. Leah’s work often welcomes a captivating combination of a mastery of tone with elements of drawing along with pro active use of negative space that suggests a looseness and element of movement to many pieces.
