Book NowHow do abstract artists transform photographs, landscapes and everyday observations into contemporary paintings?
This five-week course explores the process of moving from reference material to abstract painting—whether through studies, experimentation, or finished artworks. Suitable for beginners and more experienced painters, the course focuses on developing a personal painting process rather than reproducing what you see.
Each participant will bring two starting points:
- artworks by artists whose approach to abstraction inspires them
- photographs or visual references that hold personal or visual interest, including landscapes, film stills, personal photographs, or found images
Through guided exercises and individual tuition, we will explore how to translate these references into original abstract paintings. The course will focus on composition, colour, scale, texture, layering, editing and expressive mark-making, exploring ways to simplify, distort and reinterpret visual information.
Participants will create a series of studies before developing one or more larger paintings, or alternatively use the sessions to progress an individual painting project. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation, decision-making and developing confidence in a personal visual language.
By the end of the five weeks, participants will have developed practical approaches for creating abstract paintings from reference material, gained a deeper understanding of composition and colour, and produced work that reflects their own creative response.
Suitable for beginners and artists wishing to refresh or expand their abstract painting practice. Individual feedback will support each participant’s development at their own pace.
Please note that materials are not included in the price. A list of essential and recommended materials will be shared ahead of the course commencing.
