When They Go Low

We are delighted to welcome to the stage The Crescent Art's Youth Theatre (CAYT) as they present We They Go Low.

Social media is in a frenzy over pictures of Sarah at a party on the weekend – no one knows quite what she got up to.

When Miss Reef lectures the girls on taking more responsibility for their actions, Louise becomes enraged that the boys who took the pictures aren’t made accountable too. She wages war on the misogyny but when she threatens school stalwart Scott and his claim to the School Captain title, things get very nasty.

A website appears, rating the girls on their appearance and shaming them for their actions.

When They Go Low is about everyday feminism and the changing face of teenage sexuality in an online world.

When they go low, we go high.

When they Go Low was written by Natalie Mitchell  and is one of ten brand new plays written especially for the National Theatre's Connections Festival - one of the UK's largest celebrations of youth theatre. Each play written for the festival has been written by the best playwriting talents in the UK and are written specifically for youth theatre groups to perform.

The festival gives young people experience of professional theatre-making. Their experience mirrors that of a company producing a new play in any theatre in the country. They create marketing campaigns, design sets and costumes, operate lighting and sound boards, stage-manage their performances.

Each year the Connections team travels the length and breadth of the country to support and encourage the participants – the drama teachers and youth theatre directors who take on the challenge of staging a new play, and the young theatre companies. Each year young people across the UK embrace the festival and thrill the team from Connections with the skill, creativity, commitment and passion that go into each production, often on a shoestring budget and a rehearsal schedule carved out around school commitments.

The group will also have the opportunity to perform their show in the Lyric Theatre - one of the National Theatre's  Connections partners.
