Company B Jazz Band is one of Vancouver’s foremost jazz ensembles, featuring a harmonizing female vocal trio in vintage style. In their 10+ years as a band, this talented group of musicians has delighted audiences from all walks of life, from coast to coast to coast. Their creative arrangements, sharp image, and charming wit never fail to get toes tapping and faces smiling. They have graced the stages of such renowned jazz and music festivals as the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival (CA), the Jiangsu Jazz & World Music Festival (China), the New Orleans' Boswell Sisters Review (US), the Sacramento Jazz Festival (US), the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival (CA), as well as the Tiny Lights and Arts on the Fly folk festivals (CA). The group enjoys frequent airplay on Canada's internationally broadcast CBC Radio 1 and 2, having been featured on such popular programs as Hot Air, Canada Live, Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Café, and in live broadcasts on The Early Edition.
Since 2015, the band has also presented the Ladies of Company B, featuring the three harmonizing vocalists (also playing trumpet, ukulele and the trademark mellozoo), as well as upright bass and percussion.
The members of Company B Jazz Band met in the Jazz Studies program at Capilano University, honing their skills studying modern jazz. Interested in learning more about what came before, the friends happened upon recordings of first the Andrews Sisters and then the Boswell Sisters. It was love at first listen, and it became their mission to recreate the sound and spirit of this wonderful era of swinging jazz music, and add their own musical personalities to the mix. The original 6-piece lineup now performs with as many as a dozen members as Company B Big Band, and as few as four in what has been dubbed The Ladies Of Company B. The latter includes the three vocalists also playing trumpet, baritone ukulele and percussion, as well as upright bass.
"Company B is the quintessential 'cat's meow'. They were the perfect fit for the Vancouver International Film Festival's 1930s themed gala. I found Company B fun and friendly, and their music well researched, rehearsed, and performed. Our 1,000+ guests enjoyed dancing, humming, snapping their fingers, and generally having a great time during their performance."
~ Barbara Chirinos, Gala Producer, Vancouver International Film Festival, Vancouver, BC
"...the hit of the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival. Total Fun!"
~ Pender Harbour Music Society, Pender Harbour, BC
"This is one of my favourite groups! Their vibrant energy is infectious and they are chock full of musical talent to really do this style justice. The remarkable vocal blends, driving rhythm section and unique arrangements will make them an instant favourite of yours too."
