Somatics-Oriented Pilates

Wellbeing

Learn to undo tension and unhelpful postural habits with slow and enquiring somatic and Pilates exercises.

This course will help you to become more aware of how you use your body in everyday situations.

Movement starts with intent and the message is then carried via the nervous system to the body.

How you move depends on those messages being clear and known or 'mapped' within the body/brain. Slow movements made by sensing allow you to improve your overall movements, balance and mobility while being relaxing, refreshing leading to a very mindful movement practice.

About the Tutor

Having qualified as a Radiographer from the  Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast Barbara Gibson began working in London.

In 1986, while living in London she discovered Pilates. Taught by Christine Hocking, she studied three times a week for a year when she then decided to study with Alan Herdman and was accepted onto his year long full-time teacher training course in 1989/90.

Upon qualifying Barbara worked with Alan at his Pilates Studios in London for two years and in that time she also started her own matwork classes

In 1997 Barbara decided to move back to Northern Ireland and began teaching Pilates at the Crescent Arts Centre.

During this time she began working to become a yoga teacher, passing in 1998 with the YTTC run by Marie Quail.

Since then she has studied with a wide variety of yoga teachers and brought many international yoga teachers to Northern Ireland including Godfrey Devereux, Donna Farhi, Diane Long and Sophy Hoare.

Barbara has also studied with Angela Farmer and Victor Von Kooten, Katy Bowman, Amy Matthews, Gary Carter, Catherine Annis, Marc Acquaviva and Peter Blackaby.

In the October 2017 she successfully completed a Somatic Exercise Coach training course with Lisa Petersen from Living Yoga in Dublin.

Most of Barbara’s work today is inspired by Vanda Scaravelli.
